Today I’m sharing my quick thoughts on Zilla from 98!

You can find my play by play thoughts from while I watched down below!

Hope you enjoy, and God bless my friends!

Zilla 98:

-Ok -13 mins in – so far I like…not a whole lot. Jean Reno is great, Broderick is doing well. Can’t wait for Hank.
-Ok – the Simpsons cast is the main highlight.
-Audrey is the worst. The absolute worst.
-80% of the characters have their lone traits defined, and they’ll never grow. -The general is giving off strong South Park “MR SCIENTIST!” vibes.
-I’ll give it credit, it’s well shot – the stuff up till this point looks good.
-The score is really good so far.
-The pulling down the boat’s scene is well done. It doesn’t make much sense, but it’s still good.
-The action is well done.
-They…reallllllly didn’t even try to do theories. “It’s a dino” “nope, it’s a hybrid and I’m Nick and I’m always right in this movie”.
-No, Audrey, you suck.
-HANK!!!!! Hank Azaria is the star. Give me a spin-off with him and Jean Reno. Hank’s the only one who tried to give his 2D character personality – he succeeds. As does Jean.
-Zilla arrives in NYC… Alright, the fishing part is pretty stupid. The sequence is well shot and executed (ish…they didn’t need to have the old dude shuffle as the dock exploded behind him). The music works, you can hear the inspiration of the BIG G roar – I dig the boats falling off of Zilla/being stuck on her (the downside of this is the ever-changing scale). The T-Rex steps scene I kinda dig – it’s well done.
-Hank is the best part of this whole sequence. He elevates everything. Okay…Hank barely saves the “the step” scene. He does well, it’s just really dumb.
-Nick is always right (except when he trusts Audrey – she is the worst).
-Wellp – right after that scene where Nick was right, the movie stops dead.
-Okay, that collapsed tunnel scene was good.
-This is a really wet movie. So much rain.
-I dig the “ripping” sound of the roads when Zilla comes up for fish.
-The reveal shot is well done, the accompanying music is well done – it’s all about “look how majestic and huge this is!” And then 20seconds later “…okay, let’s kill it”.
-The destruction is well shot (I mean, next to Bay, you could count on these dudes to blow stuff up).
-Zilla: “Duck and weave baby”.
-Okay, Zilla – I like the design, it works when it’s not Big G. The ignitable gas breath is dumb though, just give her fire breath instead of atomic breath (since they said ‘no atomic breath’).
-Okay, some shots are just here for…reasons. Let’s just have Zilla hug a building, with lightning in the background and roar…cause?
-Damn, I hate Audrey.
-The “Zilla’s pregnant” thing is interesting, aaaaand the film stops dead again.
-…WTH??? He apologizes to HER for being mad that she ghosted him after he proposed and they had been together for four years?!!! THE HELL?! AUDREY IS THE WORST! …and then she steals a tape, his info, betrays his trust to advance her career… I hate her so much… AND SHE TRIES TO JUSTIFY IT?! I wish Zilla killed her…
-Man has the movie stopped dead again. We haven’t been given a reason to care about any of these characters (even though I like some of them), so all I can do now is sit and dwell in the mistakes and flaws of the film.
-THERE’S STILL AN HOUR?!
-“Trust you, why should I trust you?” “Because like Hank Azaria, I’m the best part of this awful movie.”
-I do like the scene where Nick joins the french guy.
-This performance is AWFUL – would I hate Audrey less with a dif actress? Hank and Jean raised the material and made it so much more enjoyable – whereas the crying scene she just had was SO BAD. The point is, Hank and Jean save this movie.
-Alright, the Zilla dive shot was cool. The rest I’m just meh on. The momentum on this thing has stopped dead a couple of times, and then they try to throw an action scene at ya…and, I just don’t care anymore.
-Zilla’s “dead” by two torpedoes. Dang, if I wasn’t separating I’d hate it more.
– You know what? This whole nest in the garden scene/sequence is really well done. Great mood lighting, great wonder, great escalation. The reveal of how many eggs is really well done. As much as the baby Zilla’s come off as raptor rip-offs, props to this whole scene – it’s the best part of the last 30 mins (a 30mins that felt like an hour).
-Them realizing they smell like fish is a good escalation point.
-Also, Audrey should have died here. No one would have missed her.
-I like them barricading the doors – but either failing or in fear messing up and dying – it adds to the escalation.
-In numerous ways, Audrey should have been killed by the babies.
-Why Nick tries the payphone when he has the cellphone, I don’t know…but Broderick makes it funny. Okay, even though some of the stuff happening here is played for laughs – everyone but Audrey makes it work.
-This whole section is the strongest part of the film, bar none.
-JEAN AND HANK TOGETHER AT LAST!
-The reveal to the world of the nest is well done, and the score is great. It’s so solid that for two-hole minutes I don’t hate Audrey.
– “I WANT YOU TO BLOW UP MADISON SQUARE GARDEN”. Why do I love this line and it’s delivery so much?
-Jean action manning out of MSG, while Hank comments are great. “Where did you find this guy?” “He’s from France.” Wow – just realized this movie does french stereotypes, but still shows them as strong and actiony – that’s gonna change soon.
-Audrey screamed, and I hate her again. She’s so annoying.
-The Garden explosion was GREAT.
-Poor baby Zilla’s though.
-WHY ARE YOU KISSING HER? SHE’S THE WORST AND RUINS EVERYTHING FOR YOU TWICE!
-Hank and Jean have more chemistry and are hilarious. “How you doin? You alright?”
-The charred baby corpses are rough. Momma Zilla being sad is rough. You can see why she’d be pissed. The score was good for her return and that realization too. She’s so sad. She just wanted to protect her babies!
-This final chase is alright. It’s the only time Zilla has been aggressive in this whole movie.
-Hank Azaria has done the impossible and made Audrey less annoying!
-Zilla tripping off the sudden u-turn was a nice touch.
-This chase is really well done. …the gas breath is dumb, just give it fire breath (since you said no atomic) or nothing you mooks.
-Hank and Jean make the in the mouth scene.
-Alright, we’re in the bridge where Zilla gets stuck and killed with 12 missiles. The score is really good – but the scene is conflicting. The music and Nicks’s face say we should feel bad – heck, Zilla’s actions in the movie say we should feel bad – but the movie and everyone in it were like “no she should die”. Heck, we get the slow dramatic heartbeat – and see her die (eyes go black, and then close) – which is sad – but then the triumphant music hits – so…we’re sad but then happy? Relieved? I don’t know what they’re going for. I mean, if they wanted a sad King Kong ending – go for that!
-Annnnnd what would be a post-credits scene now, the lone unhatched egg that suddenly hatches a baby and sets us up for Zilla 2…which we didn’t get, but the treatment made it sound SO MUCH BETTER than this movie. Instead, we got Godzilla TAS – which was pretty good, and also a lot better than this.
-Wellp – we got Puffy and Jimmy Page. I like the guitar work of Kashmir in this song (come with me) – and it’s not as bad as I remembered. The Zilla roars over the swears are a nice touch.
-Overall – this is a bad movie. It’s inconsistent when it drags it DRAAAAAGS, and worst of all – it features and doesn’t kill Audrey. Decent 1st act, terrible 2nd, but pretty solid 3rd. Zilla herself is cool the further you separate her from Big G. There’s some well-shot stuff, some good chases, a good score, Matthew Broderick works in his role, and the best parts are unquestionably Hank Azaria and Jean Reno. They elevated low material, made it work much better than it should have, and made it entertaining. Gotta give credit to the third act as well, I was ready to turn this off when Audrey was crying and they were “killing” Zilla – but once we got to MSG, everything – even briefly Audrey – was clicking.
-In closing, Hank Azaria and Jean Reno were awesome. Audrey was the worst.
-Also, The Wallflowers cover of We Could Be Heroes is great.
